At least 18 hours of credit in Chemistry courses above Chemistry 101 and 101L with individual grades of C or higher
are required. (Grades of C- do not satisfy this requirement.) Courses in Chemistry and other courses specifically
required (designated by number) may not be taken pass/fail.
Physics 116 and 117 are encouraged for those students considering careers as professional chemists or those students that want the option to switch from the B.A. program to the B.S. program.
Chemistry 560L is strongly recommended for students planning professional work in chemical laboratories.
This program meets the requirements of the American Chemical Society for the training of professional chemists.
A single foreign language, through level 4 (for example, German 4) if the language was studied in high school, or through level 3 if the language was not studied in high school. Courses above the minimum General Education requirement may be taken pass/fail.
May not be taken pass/fail
Chemistry 395 and Chemistry 396 may be taken for credit as many times as desired but may be counted for no more than 9 hours of total credit toward fulfillment of graduation requirements. Additionally, Chemistry 395 may not be counted more than once as an Advanced Chemistry Elective in the B.S. Chemistry Degree, Biochemistry Track, and Polymer Track. Chemistry 395, 441, 441L, 450, and 482L are recommended for fulfilling Free Electives in the B.S. Chemistry, Biochemistry Track. Chemistry 395 is recommended in fulfilling Free Electives in the Polymer Track.
One course must be taken from the following: Chemistry 395, Biochemistry 601, Biochemistry 650, Biology 422 may be used as one of the Advanced Science Elective or any chemistry lecture course numbered 420 or above.
It must be remembered that Chemistry 241 or 241H are pre- or corequisite to Chemistry 241L or 245L. Also, Chemistry 261 or 261H is a prerequisite to Chemistry 262L or 263L and Chemistry 262 or 262H is a pre- or corequisite to Chemistry
262L or 263L. However, Chemistry 241L or 245L and 262L or 263L can be taken in either order as long as all pre- and corequisites are satisfied.
Chemistry 420 or other chemistry courses numbered above 420 with the permission of the course instructor may be substituted for the courses listed for fulfilling this core requirement.
Three courses must be taken from the following: Chemistry 420, 421, 422, and 423.
