In collaboration with David Walt’s group at Tufts University as part of the Salivary Diagnostics Collaborative, we are working on developing a portable, diagnostic system for the diagnosis of pulmonary diseases using saliva as a sample specimen. Our part of the undertaking is to develop microfluidic devices to process raw saliva samples and deliver them to bead arrays developed by the Walt group for quantitative assays of target molecules. The various functional processes to be integrated on chip include cell lysis, PCR reactions, valving, sample heating and mixing.
