Upon admission, graduate students
are guaranteed support for five years if they maintain good standing.
Applicants are automatically considered for internal and University
fellowships. We also encourage our students to apply for National
Science Foundation Fellowships and other competitive fellowships.
Our support package is competitive. The stipend for research and
teaching assistantships for 2007-2008 stands at $21,000. Also, at
no cost to them, students are covered by a comprehensive major medical
insurance program, underwritten by Blue Cross/Blue Shield of North
Carolina. Students with assistantships qualify for a Graduate Student
Tuition Grant and pay no tuition. They are, however, responsible
for paying student fees of approximately $700 per semester.
The majority of first year students are supported on teaching assistantships.
Students are typically supported by research assistantships for the
remainder of their careers, with variations depending on their individual
interests and the needs of the department and their project.
Annual living costs for single graduate students in the Chapel Hill
area are estimated to be $12,000 or higher. On-campus housing is
available for both single and married students. |
