Our distinguished faculty of 40 includes six members of the National Academy of Sciences, eight members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one member of the National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of The Royal Society, a past president of the American Chemical Society, a Priestly Medal recipient, and numerous recent recipients of other national and international awards.

Our research program is one of the strongest in the country with more than 200 publications published annually and over 100 patents filed within last 10 years.

Current faculty bring over $18 million in external funding into the department annually and have extensive collaborations with industry and other academic research institutions.

  The graduate Chemistry program has a long-standing tradition and is one of the largest and oldest in the country with first Ph.D. degree in Chemistry awarded in 1883.

Currently, in the Chemistry at UNC Chapel Hill program there are:

  • > 250 graduate students (~15% international, ~50% female)
  • > 70 postdoctoral research associates
