What are the application deadlines for the 2008-2009
school year?
Once your application is complete, a committee
of faculty members of the Department of Chemistry will evaluate it.
Evaluation of completed applications will begin in mid-December and
continue until mid-February. We recommend strongly that you submit
your application materials by end of January.
International applicants should apply as early as possible to allow
sufficient time to process financial and visa documents.
Do I have to take the GRE Subject test?
GRE Subject test is NOT required for admission to the graduate program
in the Chemistry Department. You still must take GRE general test as
required by the Graduate School.
What are the minimum GRE and GPA requirements for admission?
Strictly speaking there are no minimum GRE and GPA requirements
that will guarantee admission to the graduate program in the Chemistry
Department. Research experience and letters of recommendation are
significant factors in the decision to admit students.
Graduate School guidelines for admission suggest that only applicants with GPAs above 3.0 and GRE scores at or above the 50th percentile (Verbal and Quantitative) be admitted. In general, the GPA and GRE scores for the applicants accepted to the graduate program in the Chemistry department consistently exceed these minimum requirements. The actual minimum requirements are determined based on the pool of applicants in a given year during the application review process. In rare cases it is also possible that students with exceptional research experience and recommendations, but a Verbal/Quantitative GRE score slightly less than 50%, will be admitted.
Should I take a paper, internet-based, or computer-based TOEFL test?
Either format of the test is acceptable by both the Graduate School
and the Chemistry Department.
What is the minimum TOEFL score required for admission?
Strictly speaking there are no minimum TOEFL requirements that will
guarantee admission to the graduate program in the Chemistry Department.
Graduate School guidelines for admission require that only applicants
with score above 550 (paper version), 213 (computer version), or 79 (internet version) are
considered for admission. However, the TOEFL scores for the applicants
accepted to the graduate program in Chemistry department consistently
exceed these minimum requirements and vary from year to year. The
actual minimum requirements are determined based on the pool of applicants
in a given year during the application review process.
Can I submit an unofficial copy of my GRE and/or TOEFL test results
with the application or are only the official results acceptable?
No, official scores must be submitted. Applications will not be considered
until these scores are received by the Graduate School.
Is there a way for the application fee to be waived?
The application fee cannot be waived or deferred for international
students. Under special circumstances the fee may be waived
for U.S. citizens. Please read details here.
