The Science Complex is a two-phase project designed to enhance the physical sciences and their interdisciplinary aspects. Both Venable Hall and the adjacent ROTC building will be demolished to make room for new construction of larger, modern teaching and research spaces for Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics & Astronomy, Marine Sciences and Computer Science.
Phase One

Phase One of the construction began in the Fall of 2002. According to the plan, two new buildings will be constructed to house the Department of Chemistry and Department of Marine Sciences so that the old chemistry building, Venable Hall, can be demolished. In accord with the campus Master Plan.

One of the new buildings will be sited south of Phillips Hall; the other will occupy space between Wilson Library, Dey Hall, and Kenan Laboratory. New classrooms for undergraduate and graduate courses will be included. These buildings should also provide some relief for the most critical space needs of current programs in materials science.

Phase Two
New science buildings will be built on the space made available by the demolition of Venable Hall and the Naval Armory and will house chemistry, marine sciences, computer science, as well as a combined new library for the mathematical, computational, and physical sciences.
